Hello world!

I’m fan of the series.

Of What series?

Why, Avatar: The Last Airbender that is.

As many of you know by now, the movie title had to be removed due to that other movie Avatar.  Oh I blah blahed about that movie in another blog but I re-posted it here at word press.

There has been a lot of critics that panned The Last Airbender over at metacritic.

It got a combined score of 25 which is higher than the 23 Furry Vengeance got, but barely. Between you and me, the latter was the movie that made my brain hurt.  (Oh, I just went back to the site on July 2 2:25am EDT  and now it’s down to 21 meaning it is worse than Furry Vengeance, now that’s just pathetically unjust.)

Very much so.

For that movie I think the last line of the movie “Insane in the Membrane” speaks volumes.  Unfortunately the irony of how perfect that line was did not make it funny.  It’s a shame–actually it’s a tragedy that the Last Airbender was scored anywhere near that movie.

But I am talking go to talk nor compare that movie any longer…

Perhaps part of the reason for such outrage is due to the fact that there was some high expectations for The Last Airbender.

The series Avatar The Last Airbender was quite popular: 19 Million Tuned in for Special ‘Avatar’ Week

Also the show was know to feature a diverse Asian cast which was unique, original, and refreshing.

And I agree. That was awesome. But so was the story.

Which is not so unique, I should admit, since I knocked the other Avatar movie for similar things. (But that wasn’t the only reason I disliked the movie, it was kinda like Wall-E which even though had some beautiful parts, lectured to me about how I’m going to destroy the Earth one day.  Well, I recycle!  I’m watching a movie! Get off my back! Even that wasn’t the only reason…)

But once again I digress.

What I mean is, there has been shows and movies about the elements before. I mean I can see the Captain Planet similarity:

Earth!

Fire!

Wind!

Water!

Heart! (Hope, Love, etc)

Go Planet!

Except for the pollution except if you consider: hate, envy, greed, prejudice, jealousy…

But with Aang rings in the sky didn’t just make him powerful, he had to learn. Not only how to bend but how to act, how to treat people, how to teach others how to use their heart and to live in harmony.

The movie is not much different.

In fact the movie touches all the important aspects of the series.

Some minor spoilers within.

The Fire Nation decided to take over…. Check.

The Avatar has been missing….Check

He has returned…

The rest without spoiling…. (at all.)

Pretty much follows Book 1  (the first season). Of course there are some slight changes. All movies adapted from book change things. Some more slightly than others of course.

Examples:

  • Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone the movie gives lines/roles to Ron that Neville had in the book.
  • Tom Sawyer absence in the Elijah Wood Huckleberry Finn movie (and most other adaptations apparently)
  • How Mary Lennox’s parents died in the 1993 movie adaptation of The Secret Garden.
  • The fact that Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire movie started on page 100 of the book.

And of course these are not the only examples…

And do you know what?

*News Flash!*

I actually enjoyed these movies! Even the movie version of  “A Wrinkle in Time” one of my favorite books I kinda like (though it’s  much more than just slightly wrong).

Change can be good!

The show left us with many questions.  The movie offers new insights. Especially a line earlier in the movie that hints on a later installment (probably in book 3).  Remember trilogies usually try to connect their first and third parts.  But unlike Back to the Future, which I do love, this connection will be planned and probably better! LOL

What people have to keep in mind…

The first Book of Avatar: The Last Airbender was 20 episodes long (let’s assume around 20 to 25 minutes an episode) and since the movie was cut down to 102 minutes, some “skipping” takes place.

There is some narration. Not all through it, but some. And though, that annoys some people, it doesn’t bother me.  The show did “show not tell” but they had 400 to 500 minutes to do this. I believe the narration that is included is well used to move the plot along preventing the need to repeat information that was already provided to the audience.

There will be a cliffhanger. Come on fans of the show know this, but even movie going non-fans should release when something starts by saying “book 1″ there is a proposed sequel.  Though, the first part of the story is complete, it’s only the end of one arch.  Personally I love cliffhangers. I love to want more.

Focus on the story not what everyone looks like.  I cannot speak for everyone but focusing on skin color erases the point the story is trying to make.

There are not only *heroes, and *villains in the story, but *Anti-Heroes, and *Anti-Villains.  Shades of gray, not jut black, white, red, brown and yellow. The story is about all the elements!

The Avatar is a combination, the balance of all the elements. He is about unity and peace. That’s what the heart of the show is about.

I have seen this movie and the there is a diverse group of people.  Not just the Fire Nation. The Air Nomads, The Earth Kingdom, and even the Water Tribe.

Invite everyone to watch the movie before you judge.  The reviews, the previews are not the whole picture.

Hmm Movies Avatars’ Spot Light (Not yet the Summer movie spotlight)

Current mood:  animated Category: Movies, TV, Celebrities The other day, last week, I believe I had an idea in my head to do a review/ blog piece on a movie or on movies in general.  But I forgot what I was going to blog about now?  Maybe it will come to me soon, but maybe it will not.  What I do know though, that I am not so very impressed lately. Sure some movies made me happy, some movies were not the greatest but I still found great interest in them and I had an enjoyable time.  But then we have movies like Avatar…

This movie made lots of money and the movie had lots of great effects. Basically the movie was worth watching once in the theater so fans and curious people could witness the great effects of the movie.  But have we not seen this movie before? This movie been in the theaters for months and I am pretty sure they just stopped being in the theaters in many areas just a few weeks ago and the movie is coming on DVD and Blue Ray next week. Are those 3-D Blue Rays out yet? Anyway.  There was this one thing on the internet where this one poster took the plot of Pocahontas and changed a few names to make it an Avatar plot. Sadly it fit SO completely.

Pocahontas = Avatar

Sure I heard the Braveheart, Dancing with Smurfs and Fern Gully comments (and damn does that one fit too) but when I was in the theater the movie that came to my mind was Pocahontas and that was before I read the above link.

Sure my comments are not that original and people, other than me have been saying this for months: Hate By Numbers Avatar Edition (still cracks me up).

This is the Avatar movie I am excited for: The Last Air Bender.

Prepare for massive fangirling…

Ah yes,  my next post.
